Ouch! Definately invest in a ups/power stabiliser, its worth the cash in the
long-run as the PSU's aren't good when it comes to spikes!
Anyway, the /dev/hda4 is the /home partition on your device.
When you boot using console, put the root pwd in as you say, then type:
/sbin/fsck -V -r /dev/hda4
It should then run and prompt you on the errors, generally keep hitting Y
until its done.
Hopefully it'll fix things, send it through a reboot and it'll start up.
