RE: [cobalt-users] OSRCD (slightly off topic?)

Personally I'm glad someone out there has what ever it takes and is
providing
updated OSRCD's. I've personally purchased a OSRCD from Gerald as well as
other
Raq replacement parts and couldn't be happier to have found an alternate
source
of parts and software.

The way I see it is that SUN doesn't want to be bothered with providing
Up-To-Date
OSRCD's.. I'm also betting the expense of creating a new CD every time a
package was
issued would quickly make it more expensive than most of us would be willing
to pay.

I understand the issue discussed here really seems to be more along the
lines of
should someone be allowed to sell a product that is in essence something
that is
freely available as separate PKG's. What Gerald and I'll bet a few others
are doing
is providing a service of assembling a OSRCD with Up-To-Date SUN/Cobalt
PKG's as well
as other PKG's that we might request (from PKGMaster, SolarSpeed, etc..).
To that
end they go a long way toward making some of our lives less frustrating and
more
convenient.

That said I sincerely hope that these individuals and organizations continue
to provide
these types of services even if it at some point it is used to solicited
their other
products or services.

FYI - I have no particular like for dealing with SUN/Microsoft and other
typical big
business's with their attitude and giving people the run around more often
than not.

Jerry

Its a question of charging for IE, or the actual work you do. You are
charging for a service and not a product.

I am sure if you started publicly distributing IE with your own enhancements
on a CD at $50 a time plus shipping Old Bill G would be after you too.

Gerald could be seen, and I presume has been seen by SUN as copying their
software, albeit with enhancements and reselling it without their consent.

As i say in my post, my main concern is if SUN at some point withdraw the
free download and make us all buy their software.
