So, if I don't get the message from the OS Restore CD that no valid
network card is available, my card will work?

So maybe I should just not be lazy and go make another crossover cable
and use that???

Or can the network card still be an issue??

I would bet on the NIC.
 Try a different one.
You know, sometimes it's not the actual hardware but the driver,
the Cobalt cd is using a very old version of Debian, and it probably
has a driver that will only work with particular cards

Take care that your PC where your are running the OS Restore CD has only one NIC installed, I had similar problems when I tried to Restore my Qube from a PC with two NIC Cards. I looks like it checks for a supported NIC but it didn't
listen on the supported one.

After removing the second NIC everything worked fine...
