part one:

Can you explain to me (step by step) how you got spamassasin to work
with sendmail and how you got it to run so it outputs spammail to
/dev/null ?

add the following to your procmailrc (to be found in /etc/) .. after you call spamassassin

:0
* ^X-Spam-Flag:.*YES
/dev/null

you could also use the X-Spam-Level: with a little bit of fiddling about - this would only cause really serious spam
to vanish into Null space.

part two:

how can users without a shell account have whitelists? do you use the
database way ?

no, currently most users have shell accounts, so they use the .spamassassin directory to adjust their
configs, the rest I do on a site wide level.

I was going to have a look at the database way, but just haven't had time.
