You may need to create a /dev/hdb1.

I don't know if this will work but try
cp /dev/hdd1 /dev/hdb1

should look something like this....
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 65 May 5 1998 /dev/hdb1

I have the hdd1 file, but when I try to cp it, it tells me no such device. Do I maybe need to do a mkdev ?? If so, any idea of parameters - does the Cobalt have a mkdev, haven't found it as yet.

Thanks,
Jale
