Sounds like you may have messed up /dev directory
When you tried to delete that file

Can you successfull y execute ls /dev/hdb1?

The file is missing. What is in this file? Can it be recreated with propercontents some how? And my hdb2 file is there but although I can dd to it Icannot mount it.
