Agreed... I'm a huge fan of Debian. You mentioned Gentoo, which may be an interesting idea too - it might even be worth implementing some kind of ports-like framework over the current cobalt setup, mainly due to the fact that it'd make maintainers lives a /lot/ easier... instead of having to make a package up for each Cobalt (some are MIPS based, others x86).
