Agreed... I'm a huge fan of Debian.  You mentioned Gentoo, which may be an interesting idea too - it might even be worth implementing some kind of ports-like framework over the current cobalt setup, mainly due to the fact that it'd make maintainers lives a /lot/ easier... instead of having to make a package up for each Cobalt (some are MIPS based, others x86).

Yah, for sure.  I'll announce to this list once the project's up, and we'll discuss it in more detail on the mailing list there.
