First Question about the email, you can check /var/log/maillog
Second Question about compressing files you can use tar. For more info type
man tar at shell prompt or see the URL Below:

A few stupid questions...
1) In the process of moving my email app over to another I lost an
email that is really important... Every email goes through my server,
so I've been hunting for the email address. Can anyone give me a list
of places I can look to find the logs... I've search a few already
without any luck...
2) My main web.log is getting pretty big, 50MB...
From the command line, can anyone tell me what is the command to
compress the log and make a new one?
Many many thanks.
Regards,
