Check the user's:

1. Mailspool file
2. Home directory.  Many of us use procmail to sort mail into a
   folder in our home directory.

For the record, there are indeed different spool formats.  The
standard mbox is a big, flat file.  Life is much better when
running maildir, which uses one file per message.
