I keep getting these messages from my Cobalt RaQ4 and frequency is gone up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Over the past fifteen minutes, the CPU has been heavily loaded. I used 'top' to see what's going on and realized that in.qpopper is the culprit. I guess the frequency my customers are polloing email people that too often. I checked the Cobalt KB for a solution and here is what I found...
I'll bet it has NOTHING to do with the frequency of checking mail, you are probably seeing exactly what we just corrected, the size of mailboxes being checked. They are read sequentially EVERY time mail is checked. We watched this closely, if a user had a 6.8meg email file, it took about 5 seconds of actual CPU time to have that user check their mail. When we got rid of that overstuffed mailbox, down to 0 in size, the mail check took a negligible amount of time. The user's client side went from 18 seconds to check mail to 4 seconds.
do this: ls - l /home/spool/mail | moreLook at the sizes of those files. Watch TOP, notice the user-ID and then look at the size of their file. We dropped overload #'s like yours to down in the 2.5 range. Server is screaming fast compared to before we cleaned EVERYONE's mail file.
See my posts from yesterday about methods of cleaning. Jale
