you can see if its running by doing a netstat -atnp mysql binds to tcp port
3306
i dont use PHP myadmin / web admins anymore but from the old days i knew
there was config.inc file which you needed to configure with username / pass
/ host etc
in order to use it, maybe thats why ? have u read the readme`s ?.

you can also see from doing a ps -aux

safe_mysqld should start mysqld see
