The Cobalt Qube3, used as a mail server by the local school district, failed to reboot
after installing the Qube3-ml-Update-4.0.pkg.
I have turned on the console port and can see that the kernel verification fails
after it is uncompressed! There were two .pkgsave files in /boot. I assumed
that they were backups of the original linux.gz and System.map. When those are
used to boot the system, the boot is fairly successful, but the eth0 and eth1
devices are not recognized.
Too my mind, the best way forward would be to reinstall the package. I have a
second disk drive that was created using the recovery CD. I can use FTP to copy
files to this drive and have downloaded the package. I can copy the package to the
original drive. However, I can not use the administrative interface to install
the package on the original drive because the ethernet devices do not work. I
can issue commands from the console.
After searching the Sun/Cobalt web site and using Google I could not find any useful
information. I tried calling for paid support, but discovered, that contrary to the
answering message, it shuts down at 6 PM.
I am hoping someone can give me some advice so that we can get the mail server
back in service.
Thankyou.
