Cobalt want to be applience. Please think about it as it is
applience.

Now you have experience with Linux. Please start work with 
Linux! Take PC, install the easiest (for installing) RedHat
distribution, read the FAQ for LDAP, Samba-LDAP an go for it !

Do not try to build an iron from your coffee machine !

There is number solution for this , even PDC Samba on LDAP !

The feature you see on Cobalt about LDAP is LDAP authentication
if you already have setted LDAP server running.
