The "records" file is a holding place for information entered in the UI. It is never read or touched directly by BIND.

If you alter information for domains you have manually created zone files for, yes. If you manually create zone files for domains never touched via the UI, they will be safe.

The "records" file isn't processed by BIND directly. Rather, the zone files are created by a CGI parsing "records" when you click the final "Save Changes" button in the Control Panel UI.

FYI - that's one way a "fast" DNS transfer can occur between RaQ4->RaQ4 or RaQ3->RaQ3 (note: they do use slightly different formats with respect to the SOA info): copy the records file from one RaQ3 to another RaQ3, or from one RaQ4 to another RaQ4. Then click the "Save changes" button in the UI, or manually run the CGI (forget the name right now) and all the zone files are built automagically.

All RPMS and SRPMS for all products are on ftp://ftp.cobalt.sun.com/ IAW the GPL.
