Maybe it's an attempt to see who's on a mailing list....but they didn't
really know what they were doing?

Not enough information to even make a guess. Check the IP of the sender
at http://openrbl.org/
Was the message generated by the server? Was it a Klez worm?
I hope you're not going to reply that you haven't even seen the email.
