You could probably do with 256 but 512 would be better.
and at least with my Raq3i I used off the shelf PC100 modules, I did not have to pay inflated prices to buy it up front. I saved the original module in case warranty work was needed, I'd just swap it back in.

I've considered doing this for a select group of people who could use similar to what I have. What are you seeing people charge for this? I originally contracted with a company to host mine for a monthly fee, no upfront purchase ... that was before I knew the pricing on the Raq3 and how much they were ripping me off. Luckily, they were never able to get me running so I never paid them, bought my own, host it locally at a way-cool ISP* and saved tons of money. They did try to sue me, but with 60 pages of documented emails to their tech and sales people, most going unanswered, they gave up; especially when I told them they owed me money :) - is interliant still in business? They were useless.
*way cool ISP - what are others paying to have their own servers in a rack? We use a local company that would admin for me (added cost), but they are only 10 miles from me. I have 24hr x 7 access to the facility (finger-print and mag-card to get in). They have a brand new 1/4 megawatt diesel generator system and the entire room is on these dual car-sized battery backup systems. Floor are epoxy coated, no dust no static. Not sure what I pay because it is lumped together with 3 other servers and my own SMC switch (so I don't have to pay bandwidth xfering between my own machines; I have just one port on the Cisco Catalyst.
Just curious what others are finding? Jale
