Unfortunately, once this horse has bolted, doing the
drive swap (which has been very well documented in
this thread already) is your only way out.
I've found that having a back-up 'admin' tool
installed(webmin from webmin.com is very good) can
often save you from a lot of headaches when these
kinds of situations arise, particularly for those who
don't have physical access to a machine, so it's worth
considering as a little insurance for whatever might
come up in the future.
