The problem is that the built-in backup process has to create the backup
file locally before it can ftp it somewhere.

You say the box next door is an NT/2000 unit so my advice is to checkout
Dantz Retrospect v6.0 <http://www.dantz.com/>.  The Multi Server version
comes with clients for Windows, MacOS Classic, MacOS X, Solaris and Linux.

The Linux install is just an rpm and not specific to Cobalt so there will be
no GUI changes, but ALL the backup setup, scheduling, etc happens in
Retrospect itself on the NT/2000 box.

Apart from being great software, Dantz support is legendary.  Retrospect is
commercial software ... it will cost $, but it is far more cost effective
than offerings from Veritas and Legato.
