in case you don't know where all your space went, I recommand doing "du /home -m|sort -n |less" from the commandline. Maybe you can charge a customer for a new drive or a new RaQ :-)

My first idea would have been the external scsi-drive as well. What went wrong with that? Any helpful entries in the logs? You did terminate the external box?
Another "non-intruding" method of gaining hd-space could be one of those neat NAS - boxes, that you might attach to the second ethernet-port.
