It's actually cheaper than IBM and HP for similar configurations, and is
either cheaper than, or marginally more expensive than, Dell. And Dell's
support is bad to non-existent for Linux.
The LX50 product mgmt team was very price conscious when setting up the
SKUs, knowing people were going to be looking at cost (Linux == low cost in
most people's minds) and not want to pay a premium just because it's from
Sun...
Granted, we will never be cheaper than the clone-makers and local
mom-and-pop shops building white boxes, but we also offer a lot more
value-add via software stack and support options for the target markets
(HPC/clusters, custom app deployers, etc).
