There is a bug in some versions of Squid, can't remember the details but it exhibits this behaviour when the cache size reaches the set limit, squid cannot cope and goes into a loop trying to free cache space, etc.
Check on http://www.squid-cache.org for the patch.
I'm unsure if Cobalt fixed this, as it does require recompiling squid to correct. Have you applied all PKGs to your Qube??
