Paul,

I've never tried exactly what you mentioned, but what I have done is
"created" a nameserver with the domain registrar similarly. For example I
have some domains registered with DirectNic. I go to the nameserver page and
then choose create nameserver. Then I associate ns0.mydomain.com with the IP
of the DNS server (the server itself). This worked fine for me.
