If you're interested in a web-based search engine to search sites (either on
your server or external) I recommend mnoGoSearch.
http://www.mnogosearch.org/ I've been using it for several years, since
prior to its name change from udmsearch. It is powerful, flexible and works
well. If you need to index files that aren't on the web, it can index files
through FTP, local files on your server and even database-driven pages
directly from the database (bypassing the webserver). And it's fairly easy
to get it to index and search PDF, Word, Excel and other doc types by
installing the write converter programs and configuring it properly. Best
of all, everything is open source. Can you tell I like mnoGoSearch!? <g>
