the command is grep

simple example ::

you have a file called log.txt
it contains the following words within it -

this is a cat
this is a dog
and this is a chicken

from command shell ::

to display on screen
$ grep dog log.txt
this is a dog

or to output results to a file
$ grep dog log.txt > foundit.txt

type `man grep` for more info.
