I got the box working this afternoon; I force-installed the last
all-security upgrade; the one that replaces apache. I did it from the
commandline; I don't know if it would have worked or not from the gui,
since the gui wasn't working until after I got it installed.
Prior to that I did look at the apache libraries and binaries and
everything looked fine.
