Actually, relatively pain free as I had to do this a few weeks back. There
is no downtime and no need to adjust TTL's. Firstly, you need to register
DOMAIN-X.COM as a host at your registry e.g. Verisign. Once that is up and
running, and hoping that DOMAIN-A.COM is around for a short while, show
DOMAIN-X.COM as an alias to your existing host i.e. ns.domainA.com with an
alias of ns.domainX.com. Ensure that you have A records for the new ns host.
You will then have to modify the nameservers at the relevant registry so
they show your new primary and whatever the secondary is. Once that is done
and propogated, it is then time to change the hostname of the RaQ. This will
automatically reboot so don't panic!
I kept the original hostname as an alias of the new one for a week or so
before removing it as an alias. You will need to adjust your current DNS
records and I opened up the "records" file from /etc/named, did a replace on
all of the old NS information and replaced it with the new. If you then hit
"Save Changes" within the GUI, this should sort out all of the .pri files
etc. I did however take a backup of all these files first. In a nutshell,
that's it.
