I had a similar problem a few weeks ago after a scheduled reboot of a Qube3
(i.e. I had to power it down to relocate it). It was working fine BEFORE
the power down, but none of the AppleTalk services came back AFTER the
restart.
The only other symptoms were;
[root /root]# cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
[root init.d]# ./atalk status
atalkd (pid 4857) is running...
[root init.d]# ./atalk restart
Shutting down AppleTalk services: ERROR!Can't unregister qube:Workstation@*
Can't unregister qube:netatalk@*
atalkd okafpd ok
Starting AppleTalk services: (backgrounded)
The services were not available because they could not "register".
I tried everything I could think of to get the services running again. I
logged a call with Sun and they took ages to get back to me. As I couldn't
wait I installed a fresh disk, performed an OS Restore, reconfigured and
restored my data.
Sun have come back with some suggestions and as soon as I have a chance I'll
reinstall the original hard disk and see if it resolves the problem.
Essentially we compared the /etc/atalk/atalkd.conf between a new (working)
system and the original.
My "broken" version contains the lines;
eth0 -phase 2 -net 65280-65534 -addr 65280.102
eth1 -phase 2 -net 65280-65534 -addr 0.0
The working version contains a slightly different entry for eth0 and none
for eth1;
eth0 -phase 2 -net 0-65534 -addr 65280.141
I'm not using eth1 and I never edited /etc/atalk/atalkd.conf ... I simply
relocated my Qube3 within my home office.
I have not tried this "fix", but its the only thing we can find which is
different between working and not working.
I've simply not had an opportunity to swap disks around to try this myself.
Cheer, Malcolm
