SUGGESTION ABOUT BACKUP / RESTORE ROUTINES:
Whether or not you have had the unfortunate experience of being required to
restore User Created Data from whatever backup solution you use on a Cobalt
product, create a routine schedule for doing a periodic restore to check the
verity of data which has been stored via the backup routine. O/S Restores are
a different matter, this note specifically refers to User Created Data.
Folks tend to "get it" - that they need to backup their appliance(s) but they
frequently neglect to check if the restores work until they critically need
them to work now(!) if not yesterday.. We have had the experience at several
client sites where backups on Cobalt Appliances were never verified or checked
for accuracy when months of backups have been corrupting unbeknownst to the
client - only to discover the problem well after the "horses have already
bolted from the barn". It is not a waste of time and money to do this, it is
costly to have not done it and find out that it did not work. Refer to Malcom
McLeary's Backup post archived earlier this month.
That's my 2 cents for the day...
