It works fine on every system I've ever tried it on.
And it's well documented. Here's what the "bat book", Sendmail, by
Bryan Costales with Eric Allman, published by O'Reilly, has to say about
the subject, on page 628 (2nd Edition):
"For the db files, the .db suffix will be added automatically if it is
not already included in the name."
