Hmmm, would highly suspect that MTU was not the "real" issue there. Most
routers fully understand how to "translate" between differing MTU settings.
The problem comes in with DSL which generally requires an MTU of 1492 or less
because the packets have to be placed into ATM "cells" to go over DSL.
Since ping, icmp, traceroute packets and such are really "small", they
would not hit this limit and would be fine.
