Re: [cobalt-users] Raq550 vs Xserve

I've been using the production model of Mac OS Xserve - in beta for about
2 months at one of my client locations - it uses the standard OS X server
control panels / Mac's GUI but also has a terminal window for those of us
who hate cute little GUI's.

The education/academic price is 2499 and retail to the gen pub is 2999, so
far, I'd give it an OK but not great. The price is high for what you get,
but I have some clients that are dying to spend the money once I determine
if our company will support that upgrade path because they love Mac and
are willing to pay. I'd still much rather configure a 1U rack redhat box
for 500 but I am somewhat biased toward practicality over cute form
factor.

As to whomever gets into the G4vsPIII ghz microdifferences "crushing one
or the other" most webhosters etc. never run software that can take
advantage of anything above a ghz so it's a moot point - hw reliability in
general, memory, and drive space and how much expense and hassle or lack
thereof, is it to get the product supported or not , are the pertinent
specs to be concerned about.

That's my 2 cents....
