I don't think this would solve your problem of not being able to su as /var
is full but it does give me an idea, why don't you create a pkg that deletes
some stuff of /var that you can do without so that you can get in and tidy
up.  As you say the pkg is run as root so should be able to do this but I
suppose you need an inkling of what has gone wrong so that you can delete it
safely
