I'm not knocking anyone who makes PKG files available for all to use
(haven't used a Cobaltworld PKG yet, but keep up the good work), but
personally I trust a source tarball distribution from a known good source
with a md5 checksum I can verify more than a PKG or RPM (or tarball for that
matter) from another source. Unless you unpack the package or RPM and
examine its contents, the scripts it runs and the files it installs you're
trusting that the person that put it together has good intents, knows what
he/she is doing and that it was tested on a system like yours. Personally,
I have total confidence in the outcome whenever I do a source install. Of
course, I've been doing them for years, I read the documentation, examine
the install scripts and understand the implications. I'm not as confident
with RPM or PKG installs, especially if I blindly install them. YMMV. I'm
not saying I'm right and you're wrong, I'm just saying that there is
uncertainty when not installing from source.
