I think the REAL issue is not the OS at all, as Jeff says, MSAdvServ is free
to hosting comanies so is no more of a budget burden than Linux + plesk or
linux + cobalt..
The real issue is surely that is you want a server where every site is
running php + mysql in some form (a trend that is accelerating thanks to
phpnuke / postnuke / phpwebsite / etc etc) at an adequate speed, and you
determine that a dual 1Ghz box with 3 Gb RAM is the answer then you will NOT
be buying or using cobalt XTR, because for the same money you can get PC
hardware in 19" that will meet the spec.
Until / Unless cobalt start producing relatively powerful "appliances" then
their products will only be appropriate to newbies like myself who are
starting out or cheapskates on their way out of the business or who will
only ever want one server such as those who are (hopefully) buying my old
RAQ2's
The RC architecture does lend itself very well to upgrading, I just recently
upgraded my local (windows) file server from P2/300 to P3/900 simply by
adding a slocket adapter and new CPU for the very reasonable sum of £100,
with an attendant three fold boost in performance.... If any remotely
similar upgrade path was available for my RAQ2's I would be upgrading them
instead of flogging them and buying new, which is a more expensive and
awkward option.... my RAQ2 are after all younger than the above mentioned
P2/300...
