[cobalt-users] next time just buy a PC

Have all you Qube/RaQ owners considered the "buy a PC" option ?
Over here in the NL you can buy your PC with class-A hardware,
and Win2000 Pro installed on it, 7200 RPM Caviar HD of 40 GB,
512(!) MB SDRAM, 1,6 GHz Intel P-IV CPU, in a nice and quiet
full-tower with all accessories included (mouse, 2 network cards,
keyboard, monitor, speedy ASUS 400 MHz mainboard, loads of extras)
for only ? 1300 to ? 1500 !

Whereas a Qube 3 will already cost you the same.

When reading from this list, I can hardly say it would take
more time installing a linux-server on such a PC and
kicking Win2000 off of it. And as for the admin,
you can use VNC or Radmin, for email you can get
loads of free PHP-software, Apache will run like
a charm on such hardware, and even in Win2000pro
if you would want that. For FTP you can use
BPftp, cheap and rock-stable and much more options
than the Sun Qube's FTP. For SSH you can use
loads of different free software as well.
Advantages: You maintain all control,
know where everything is on your drive(s),
what is working and what is installed.

I was most surprised by the fact that the hardware
for the Sun machines is so expensive in comparison,
and that the pkg files are not even functioning
that well after all, and that those Qubes make so
much noise, compared to the competitor average PC-cases.

Don't get me wrong, the Cobalt Sun stuff is cool and nice material,
but I wonder why it is so popular, because really, is there
a reason for it? The software they use is free anyway.
The right config will cost you time either way,
no matter if you use a PC or a Qube.
