I'm replying here, onlist, because I think it's important to get a lot
of input one some of the Cobalt support ventures I've been
considering...
A year ago I was vociferously against "forums", much more interested in
mailing lists. But I'd really like to know what the group concensus
is. Do we want forums (I've got the perfect domain for the <smile>), or
do we want mailing lists? Or a private newsgroup server?
If the concensus is forums, I can probably have them running the first
of the month. I'd want to convert the current qube-users list to a a
forum, but I don't know if anyone will want to move. I don't think the
concensus will be forums, because the other RaQ forums seem to have died
early deaths.
If the concensus is mailing lists, then I really want to switch from
Majordomo to mailman first. Not that I don't like Majordomo; it's just
showing it's age and I've never done the work to implement things like
demime, html-based searchable archives, etc. I don't know how long
it'll take me to set up mailman; I have to stfa (search the fine
archives) and stfw (search the fine web) to find out where to get it
from and how to install it on my RaQ. I might still be able to have it
running by the first of the month.
If the concensus is a private newsgroup server, then I don't know how
long it'll take me to set up one of those either; shouldn't be too long,
it should be a lot easier than the other options, but the instructions
may be harder to come by <smile>. I guess the easy way would be to just
find an rpm for one from a set of Red Hat 6.2 disks. Remember I'm NOT
considering a public newsgroup, and private newsgroups require that you
know how to install a newsreader if you haven't already, and how to set
up a second server inside it, since most are set up by default to read
your ISPs public newsgroup server.
I know what I prefer, but it's NOT what I prefer that's important. If
the group doesn't use what I set up, it's worthless.
So the first of the month is my target date, depending on how fast I get
responses here, and how fast I can implement them.
And whatever I do set up, I hope the MetaFAQ maintainer will be willing
to list them.
