While I still don't see how overfilling root could destroy only one file
and no other, I'm now beginning to see the logic of Barbara's answer;
based on the symptoms, it's "an httpd conf" file and not as I misread it
THE httpd.conf file. So it could work, and worth trying.
BUT ... and it's a BIG BUT ...
I'd still worry about whether any other files were overwritten/destroyed
as well.
