Hi Gary,
Although not directly answering you're problem, you're wanting to use
the 2.4 kernel? For iptables or VPN or something similar?
Have you taken a look at the (VERY developmental, so no production
machines naturally) packages available from (unofficial)-cobalt ftp.
ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/users/thockin/2.4/
Take a look, I've used it on a Raq3 for testing, and it went on fine.
Just follow instructions and experiment.
(Notice the hints here on it being developmental, there are README's in
there that Tim has put there for good reason)
