I'll throw my 0.02 in. While I do have two partners, this is
essentually a one man shop. We run out of our own little facility.
While they are not all Cobalts, we have a total of 8 of our own
servers running here right now. I have no problem whatsoever keeping
them all up to speed.
I figure I can personally handle roughly twice what we have
now. About 20 or so servers without much of a problem at all. I
don't think this is reprsentitive of the industry though simply
because we do run out of our own facility. I'm all but certain I
pour over our equipment more than most as there's nobody I can
call for help. Thus I have to be a bit more careful than most.
Additionally, if were were colo'd, not that we'd do such a thing, I
wouldn't have to deal with the necessary support equipment (routers,
switches, ups, etc) and things like adding more memory or another
drive to a machine would only require a phone call rather than my
having to unrack the box, open it up, do what ever needs to be done,
and rack it back up, etc. The time saved would obviously result in
my being able to handle more servers.
Peace be with you,
