But they're to blame for not running VLANs and proper IP
filtering. That's a sizable security risk, and an unacceptable

The MX record, like any other DNS entry, must be hosted by the
authoritative servers. If mydomain.com's NSen are authoritative,
then they must host the MX records.

Example:
IN MX 10 name.of.primary.mx.
IN MX 25 perhaps.a.secondary.mx.
IN MX 87 maybe.tertiary.too.
on the authoritative machines. If you're not the authority, the
NS that are must have entries like the above.
If you run a DNS master, you could make the entries on your
machine and have the auth NSen slave or rsync zone info from you.
