The quick answer is "yes". The extended answer is "requires a
bit of thought".
The ~username hack tells Ap to look in a subdirectory of a user's
home directory, rather than the main site. A few approaches to
do what you want:
1. Symlinks. Yuck. Not recommended. Will elaborate on my view
if anyone wishes.
2. Redirects from "server/username" to "server/~username".
Requires configuration for each user.
3. Use the "Alias" directive per user. Not really recommended,
but probably cleaner than either of the above.
4. Hack Ap. It's there for the modification.
5. mod_speling. (?) I'd have to read the doc before making any
assertions here.
Off the top of my tired head, I should think that #4 would be
trivial enough if compiling from source... and I think that one
might even be able to write a DSO that could do this, but I'd
better not say much more before I'm awake again. ;-)
