We have had such a problem due to disk full on the / partition. A user
changed his settings with the gui and the server couldnt write the
/etc/shadow /etc/passwd-files correctly.. so nobody could log onto the
server.
we than accessed the server through the console-port, deleted some files and
tried to rebuild teh server with a backup we had.
