the following from /etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap
stop)
echo -n "Stopping portmap services: "
killproc portmap
echo
rm -f /var/lock/subsys/portmap
;;
It may be that it was not actually running when you tried to stop it.
You prolly won't remember but did it echo "Stopping portmap services."
Prolly should have ran /etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap status first
