As a general rule:
Keep your software as up to date as possible. This means applying
patches as soon as possible, especially security patches.
It is also wise to apply patches in the correct order, ie from the
bottom to the top, not just picking ones that you think are relevant.
I say this is a general rule because there is the possibility that
something may break when you patch it, in that case you should research
the situation until you know what the result will be. Using this list
is a good way of doing this, as is Google.
