It really depends on what type of FTP client your using.
Normally FTP clients have a Site properties section where you can specify
the local folder to log onto, you will just have to enter the full path
/home/sites/site1/web. (RAQ3) mileage may differ.

I suggest using WinSCP if your FTP'ing from a windows based system it is
more secure than say CuteFTP, in WinSCP you set up your Site Login there is
a tab labelled Directories under Remote directory is where you would put the
path like /home/sites which would log you into the folder that contains all
the sites on the server.

There has been extensive discussion into FTP and its vulnerabilities
...search the archives for more info. If your transfering files as the
server admin I highly recommend using an FTP client that uses SSH and
doesn't send your admin password in clear txt.
