Number one, don't use telnet under any circumstances, period.

If you have ssh installed on the server, you can accomplish most of what you 
want as admin via WinSCP. An FTP "Like" client that allows you to log in via 
ssh as admin with, if I'm not mistaken, about the same level of user status 
as logging in as admin via ftp, but without sending your password in plain 
text.

Yes, it's a bit more work, but the price of being lazy as a server 
administrator is a hell of a lot more work down the road after you are 
hacked.. and you will be.. trust me.
