A nice little brainteaser for Friday, its had me baffled!
A raq3i with hostname myserver.mydomain.com
Virtual site called www.thedomain.com
Configuration for the virtual site as per normal, except leaving the
Accept Email for Domain unticked.
This is because we use a dedicated mail server to handle mail for
thedomain.com, so we don't want the raq trying to deliver mail locally,
it should deliver it as though it was an external domain.
In the Server Management > Control Panel > Email Server > Parameters
I've removed all entries for thedomain.com and www.thedomain.com from
relaying and aliases.
I've confirmed this by checking via ssh in the files
/etc/sendmail.cw
/etc/mail/access
/etc/mail/relay-domains
After doing so I manually stopped sendmail (/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail
stop) re-hashed the relevant files, ran newaliases (just in case) then
started sendmail back up again.
After doing that I tried a mail delivery test:
sendmail -bv andy@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
And got back:
andy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx User unknown
Odd! It was trying to deliver the mail locally and getting a failure. I
then tried the same test for a user that I knew was on the Raq:
sendmail -bv browna@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
And got back:
browna@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx deliverable: mailer local, user browna
Does anyone know why this is happening??
As far as I can tell in the sendmail config files the only local-domains
access file is /etc/sendmail.cw which definitely does NOT have
thedomain.com in it, yet sendmail still insists on trying to deliver
locally.
BTW: DNS and MX records are setup correctly pointing to the other box,
and this Raq in question has DNS switched off, and points dns to the
real dns servers. Outside mail coming into the domain is fine, its just
from this raq delivering to thedomain.com that won't happen.
Suggestions please before I start to wrip more hair out with this
problem!

Andy Brown
