Re: [cobalt-users] Support, Warranty and Hype

Everyone,

No one can counter the argument that some of Sun/Cobalt's policies leave a
lot to be desired. They run a business and are free to do so as they please.
We're free to take our business elsewhere. (Please, no more rants about
Sun's commitment to existing customers....it's a dead horse. Just accept the
fact you get what you've got, view ANY support as a gift, and you'll be much
happier.)

That being said, you all rant and rave that Sun's support in this forum is
underwhelming to say the least. Then someone like Bruce shows up, and you
all take your turns beating the $h*t out of him over an issue that's beyond
his control. Everyone knows you can restore a RaQ3 to a RaQ4, just do what
you need to do and get over it already. Do you really expect Bruce to
officially sanction this practice when his paycheck depends on maintaining
the policies of his employer? In his earlier post, he already gave a wink
and a nod to the practice when he said:
---
>> Doing any of the above would obviously invalidate your warranty

>There really isn't much of a "warranty" anymore, now that the concept of
>free support has gone away.

>> and possibly infuriate Sun in the process as well

>As much as violating the terms of the License Agreement could
>"infuriate" I suppose... :)

Read between the lines, folks. Quit looking for a scapegoat. You put him in
an impossible position when you force him to defend Sun's choices. Be
grateful you can download an ISO instead of paying for the CD, be grateful
that Bruce is here trying to help, but I fear if you collectively continue
to force the issue Sun could just decide to enforce the license, or charge
for the CD for registered owners of the appropriate devices only. Think
about it, would you show up and try to help if you were going to get thrown
to the wolves? If you force the issue, he *has* to give the official company
line. Why bother?

I appreciate your positions and largely agree with them, but I also
appreciate Bruce's attempts to answer questions in this forum. Give him a
break - he's here to help, not defend.

Just my $0.02,

Brandon
