Re: [cobalt-users] Setting a Seconday DNS Server - Help Please

We have been doing this for around 3 years, more recently with 3 x RAQ's..
will ask our webmaster if we can post the technical info Monday next week.

Whilst the method may not have been an intended use of the DNS systems, it
has provided us with 100% uptime for more than 2 years despite the deluge of
DoS attacks, outages of various types and the like during that time, plus a
data centre move for 1 RAQ.

The best spread of cover is obtained by utilising servers in different
geographic locations. The system we employ also provides a degree of load
sharing, though many factors affect the routing of requests - we usually
find the split varies around 45% - 55% between our 2 UK servers. This will
be affected by both server and client locations as well as ISP permutations
etc.

It is an ideal solution for companies wishing to run a server say in the US
and another in the UK - these can be used to provide cover for each other in
the event that one should fail, many other scenarios are supported of
course. I might add that almost without exception, requests are connected to
the server offering the quickest response.. usually the local one of course.

Sorry I cannot publish details at this time but must discuss with other
first.
