Never have more than one PTR record per IP#. And you don't need them at
all unless your upstream has specifically delegated reverse DNS to you
(and most don't). We generally have our PTR records pointing to machine
names, which are not the same as server names, even though they end up
looking similar.

You need an MX record for anything on the right side of the "@" symbol
in an email address.
If your clients' users are going to get email at name@xxxxxxx, you need
an MX record for xyz.com. Do they get email at name@xxxxxxxxxxxx?
Probably not, but if so, they need an MX record for maill.xyz.com. For
www.xyz.com? The same issue applies. For ftp.xyz.com? It's highly
unusual for anyone to get email to ftp.xyz.com.
For the record, we only accept email at name@xxxxxxxxxxx
